What is FSSAI Registration?
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the regulator for food safety in India. Every Food Business Operator (FBO) must hold a valid FSSAI registration or licence before starting operations. The 14-digit FSSAI number must be displayed on the premises and printed on food package labels.

Documents Required
Common to all categories
- Photo identity proof of the proprietor / partners / directors
- Proof of possession of premises (rent agreement, utility bill or ownership document)
- Constitution of business — partnership deed, certificate of incorporation or self-declaration for proprietorship
- List of food products or categories to be handled
- Passport-sized photograph of the applicant
Additional for State & Central Licence
- Blueprint / layout plan of the processing unit with dimensions
- List of equipment and machinery with capacity
- Food Safety Management System (FSMS) plan
- Water test report from a recognised laboratory (for manufacturers)
- NOC from the municipality or local body
- Details of the nominated technical / responsible person
- Import Export Code (for importers and exporters)
The Application Process
- Determine the applicable category based on turnover, activity and reach.
- Create an account on the FoSCoS (Food Safety Compliance System) portal.
- Complete Form A (Basic Registration) or Form B (State / Central Licence).
- Upload the supporting documents and pay the government fee.
- For licences, a food safety officer may inspect the premises; queries are answered through the portal.
- The FSSAI registration certificate or licence is issued with a 14-digit number, valid for 1 to 5 years.
